Renegade Riddims: Section (10 Years Mix)

Share

Section is James Barclay, a 43-year-old DJ and Producer from Worthing (UK) who has been DJing since 1997. He has been fortunate to play across the UK, New York City, Miami and Portugal.  Section began making beats in 2006 and began releasing tracks under this alias in 2013, initially as a duo with the talented Nathan Solley. James and Nathan still make music together and Nathan is a key part of the Section journey.

Section have had several releases across the scene’s biggest labels including; Dread Recordings, Skeleton Recordings, Rebel Music, Counterpoint Recordings, Serial Killaz, Sub-Liminal Recordings, Audio Addict and Deep In The Jungle. In 2017 he started his own label, Locked Up Music, which has gained support from all corners of the scene.

Section’s debut LP ‘The Fourth Hour’ came out on the Portuguese label Counterpoint Recordings in July 2022. The LP demonstrates Section’s versatility and some of its successes include; reaching number 7 in the Beatport Drum & Bass charts and having ‘Colours In The Sky’ featured on BBC Introducing.

During the past 10 years Section has cemented himself in the scene that he loves so much and he’s not stopping any time soon with forthcoming releases on No Reality Music, Rebel Music, Format Music and of course Locked Up Music.

Outside of Drum & Bass James is an NHS Physiotherapist and to celebrate the milestone of 10 years James has curated a 10 track LP featuring some of his favourite tracks from the Locked Up back catalogue (10 Years of Section | Locked Up Music (bandcamp.com). James will be donating all monies to the Love Your Hospital charity (www.loveyourhospital.org) which supports the hospitals where he works.

Section joins us for the second time on our Renegade Riddims series, the first mix was back in 2020 (check it out here). He returns with a really special mix to mark 10 years of releasing music in Jungle Drum & Bass. I’ve been a huge fan and supporter of Section for quite some time, James and I have a very similar taste in music, when he offers me music to premiere for Locked Up Recordings he can very often guess which tracks I will favour.

The new mix features only music he’s created or remixed and there’s some absolute belters in there!

Check it out below! Don’t forget to grab a copy of ’10 Years of Section’ from Bandcamp here and if you’re feeling this mix, it’s available as a free download here!

Q&A:

Sum up this mix in 10 words…

Ten years of my productions, collaborations and remixes. Very proud!

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

Probably ‘Fly To Me’ as it features on my debut LP and it really expresses how I felt during the time of writing it. A really special tune for me.

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

Over many years I have developed a mixing style that seems to work for me. This mix demonstrates many years of practice, clanging and frustrations! The opportunity to put this mix together for DT is a very proud achievement for me. Big up!

Tell us about your next EP?

‘Lift The Veil’ has just been released on Ghost Hardware’s No Reality Music and I have a two track release on Locked Up with badmen Kumarachi and Jaise, out 3rd April.

What have you got coming up?

I have a lot of music waiting to come out on various labels, which is still really exciting for me. Locked Up Music has joined forces with Martyn Nytram’s Hardpoint Recordings to do a quarterly night at Sicknote and Dexta’s Planet Wax. The first one was on March 4th with more dates to announce soon

When was the last time you actually raved?

Raved?! I rarely go out unless I’m playing these days. I went to Steelyard last year to see Fathom Audio, which was amazing. I love hearing Fathom live.

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?

If you love what you do, keep doing it and don’t compare yourself to others who may seem more “successful” or “popular”. Keep pushing yourself and being true to the art you want to create. That’s where success comes from.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me over the last ten years. I have met lifelong friends through this journey and I get inspired every day by people’s skill and passion.
