Renegade Riddims: Pinks

Pinks is a Drum & Bass and Jungle DJ from Camden, London. Although Drum & Bass and Jungle are what she predominantly plays she is also known for her creative blends and double drops with other genres such as UK Hardcore, Footwork, Tek, Psytrance, Speedbass and more!

Pinks is someone who always likes to think outside the box which is reflected in her song choice, she interlaces otherworldly breaks and percussion with rolling basslines to take the audience on a novel journey in the rave. She focuses on the underground with her selection and you are likely to hear music that you have never heard before.

This year was especially exciting for Pinks as she made her Tomorrowland debut in Beligum. With loads more on the cards coming upm this is a DJ you should have your eyes and ears on!

Today Pinks join our Renegade Riddims serries with an eclectic range of music, some of which may take you by surprise! The mix features tracks from the likes of Mrs Magoo & DJ Hybrid, Serum, Klinikal, Trex, Napes, Guzi, Jubei and Stay-C among loads more…

Sum up this mix in 10 words…

An ode to rave, combining the old with the new.

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

This is a tough question, but probably Six Days by Jimmy J & Cru-l-t. That song is such a classic banger, I can’t help but sing along and dance whenever I hear it.

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

90s Hardcore & pianos!

What have you got coming up?

On the 8th of October I’m supporting Changing Faces alongside Nathan X, Clarkus & Q Sermon with MC Chickaboo on the mic at Unorthodox’s one year celebration at Peckham Audio! If you haven’t heard of Unorthodox we are the UK’s leading queer Drum & Bass movement, our events are LGBTQIA+ focussed (allies are welcome!) and you can expect all kinds of outrageousness, from Britney bootlegs to drag queens performing to DNB. I have some other events in the pipeline, but I can’t talk about them yet! I’m also going to be focussing more on my production and getting projects finished. Keep your ears open for some Pinks releases…

When was the last time you actually raved?

The last time I raved was at 1985’s event at Motion in Bristol, it was a quality day rave and I was lucky enough to see Alix Perez twice that week! It was a great mix of DNB, 140, Jungle and Dub, perfect Summer vibes. It was also my best friend Solstice’s birthday, so it was lovely to come to Bristol to celebrate them as we don’t get to see each other much. Solstice also runs just Be, which is another label that I am a resident for, all the residents are either female or non-binary and the label especially focuses on gender inequality in the scene by empowering gender minorities and raising awareness on gender minority related issues within rave culture.

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?

Rules are meant to be broken, don’t feel like you have to adhere to purism within music and no matter who you are or how famous you are or aren’t always be kind and treat others with respect. Also, support diverse lineups!
