DT718 – Robosonic

Share

Growing up, Cord Labuhn was surrounded by musical inspiration.  Whether from the golden age of hip-hop that he loved so much, simply from his parents‘ record collection or the musical instruments that he found himself naturally able to master.  It was from a young age that Cord’s fascination developed and turned to DJing and producing, as he taught himself everything from beat-making and scratching to self-releasing.

With his love of music deep and varied, Cord has always played, produced and written at the highest level and with collaborators spanning the genres.

ROBOSONIC ON THE PODCAST

The Berlin resident took the world by storm as ROBOSONIC with a string of popular releases that went into the crates of countless DJs worldwide and made it to top spots in the infamous Beatport charts (e.g. “Worst Love”, “The Edge” 2012, “La Fique” 2013, “House Music” 2015, “Rise” 2016). With releases on labels like Defected, Toolroom, Get Physical, Diynamic, Stil vor Talent, Yoshitoshi, Nervous, Crew Love, Kittball and Mother Recordings, Robosonic became an authentic figurehead for a sound dubbed “Golden Era House” (Juice Magazine). Not only because Cord was convincing real rap icons like Masta Ace, Jeru the Damaja and KRS-One to collaborate on house tracks, but also because Robosonic remixed true legends like Todd Terry, Arthur Baker, Kerri Chandler and Eddie Amador.

2020 kicked off in much the same way, with Robosonic’s high energy and original sets in demand with clubs and festivals internationally.  “For the People” received a stellar remix in February from Sonny Fodera, which was premiered on BBC Radio 1 by Pete Tong and continues to occupy the top of the House charts.  Robosonic further cemented his position as one of house music’s most respected selectors by being asked to mix the Armada Miami Compilation and with a remix for Roger Sanchez and Robbie Rivera around the corner as well as original releases lined up on Defected and Armada Subjekt and a few surprises up his sleeve, the time is now for ROBOSONIC!

Today, he joins on the podcast for the first time. Listen to it below, on Mixcloud or iTunes here.

Sum up this podcast in 10 words…
Excited live-recording of my first live gig – touching CDJs after 6 months. Relapse!

What’s your personal favourite track on it?
It might be a unexpected Maya Jane Coles & Cayam record running fast on 134 BPM, called Seratonin. That whole EP is fresh and bouncy. I wanted to squeeze a tune into my set, to listen to it on a proper sound system.

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?
The most special and secret ingredient might be my unreleased collaboration with Joeski, that we made during lockdown in between NYC and Berlin. For the first time I played out the demo ‘version 1‘ for people to listen and actually dance to. Liberating.

Tell us about your latest EP?
„The Fool“ with Ferreck Dawn and Ashibah just dropped on Armada Subjekt. Hypnotic, vocal driven, energetic, uplifting with a touch of melancholy. It was meant to be come out earlier this year to celebrate a busy touring season, but a virus fooled the world. The love remains.

What have you got coming up?
Next one on the menu will be a golden era house-hybrid with New Jersey rap legend Rah Digga, who actually loves club music and was excited to hop on that joint, when she came to visit me in the studio before Covid hit. And you can actually hear a teaser of my „Turn Around“ rework of the Phats & Small classic coming out some time soon. Made that in quarantine as well, it served as a good medicine, so I’m looking forward to inject it into the peoples’ sets and playlists.

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?

Well, a universal message? Keep it up, stay patient and reasonable, leave no one behind. Take chances for positive change. As bad and unprecedented the situation is, it should be the time to end racism, inequality, injustice, war and deceit. And live peace and unity instead. I vote for global, planetary and social health! 1love!
Cord.

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
