DT648 – Yulia Niko

Leaving the comforts of home in her early 20s, Yulia Niko has begun to live the life she always imagined for herself. A resident DJ at both Verboten, Brooklyn and Heart, Miami she has continued to hone the deck skills she acquired all those years ago in the clubs of Sochi, Russia.

Now touring the globe, she has become a virtuoso, able to play the right music and any time of the night, from warming up to headlining. Her label, Tochno Techno is vinyl-only and a labour of love. Named as one to watch by Mixmag in 2017, Niko’s star is still on the rise regularly performing to sold-out crowds and via live streams around the world.

Sum up this podcast in 10 words…
It’s a journey from the 90s to present days vinyl bangers.

What’s your personal favourite track on it?
The second track by Saktu on Heisenberg, a record label from St. Petersburg. I am probably the 3rd person on the planet who has it. So this is a unique opportunity to hear it.

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?
Each track is absolutely my sound. So a special ingredient – it is my personal taste.

What’s the best gig you’ve played recently?
I am a big fan of travelling to South America and Electronic Piknic Festival in Chile was so good. I was playing at the time of sunset and my mission was to build the vibe on the dancefloor. It was mental at the end. I wish i could do the same every day.

What have you got coming up?
Actually, exciting things for the upcoming 2 months. On the 20th of June, I have a remix out for Eelke Kleijn’s track – Lost Souls. I just saw Damian Lazarus play it at the opening of Circoloco/DC10 and the reaction of people was incredible. Also, I will play at the Doctor Festival/Force Field on 13th of July alongside with my 2 favourite DJs ever, Damian and Luciano.

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?
Do not listen to anyone and be yourself than there is a possibility you will get a chance to drop your mix on Data Transmission one day too lol.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
