The Prodigy’s ‘The Fat of the Land’ LP turns 25!

Today, Thursday 30th June marks 25 years since the release of The Prodigy’s ‘The Fat of the Land’. Do you remember where you were or where and when you first bought or heard the album? For me, I got off a nightshift at 6am on release day and headed straight to Our Price in Dover, which was opening at 7am, to join a queue of one other person (most of my mates went to HMV in London who were opening at midnight to buy the record). ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ was playing REALLY loud as the doors opened. I looked at the other person, he looked at me with mischief in his eyes and we both both legged it, grabbed a copy and slammed them on the counter at the same time. The cashier looked at us as if we were mad and said “Sorry love, I think he was a millisecond faster”. So, I was officially the 2nd person to buy the album in Dover!
The album became so iconic it turned the sound of underground rave music into a global force; capturing the world’s attention and dominating the charts. In celebration XL Recordings today announces two-anniversary releases including a limited edition 2LP silver 12” vinyl package of the original album with a reimagined version of Alex Jenkin’s artwork, and a brand-new remix of ‘Firestarter’ by Drum & Bass pioneer, the executioner himself…Andy C. Available to pre-order from today, both get a full release on 4th November.
The Prodigy’s third studio album ‘The Fat of the Land’ became a global phenomenon, debuting at number one on album charts around the world it has gone on to sell over 10 million copies. The first single to be released from the album was the incendiary ‘Firestarter’ which saw Keith Flint take centre stage on vocals for the first time, and was released alongside the groundbreaking video shot deep under the streets of London, directed by Walter Stern.
