We make no secret of our appreciation of Simian Mobile Disco here at Data Transmission. It’s hard not to be impressed with an act that seamlessly flick between live shows and DJ sets, retaining their audience whilst refining a constantly evolving sound. Electro, techno and house, the dynamic duo have mastered it all, delivering 3 genre hopping albums on the way.

Thus whenever the pairing share a new release it is always treated with a fair amount of excitement here at DT HQ and following on from their excellent collaborative work with fellow duo Bicep, Simian have now unveiled the title track of their forthcoming release on Delicacies: ‘Tong Zi Dan

For those of you less than familiar with the Tong Zi Dan are the Chinese delicacy usually translated as “virgin boy eggs”. Like the tea stained eggs youʼll find in your ramen, these are eggs cracked part way through the boiling process, to let the flavours of the liquid seep through. Except in the case of Tong Zi Dan, the liquid is the urine of prepubescent boys.

Billed as taking inspiration from the dish as the record is described by Delicacies as “Very much like that urine, the burbling pads and uric submerged melodies permeate the cracked surface of the smooth ovoid outer casing of rhythm.” Well we don’t know about that but we do know a good tune when we hear one is this is undoubtedly a stormer.

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
