Secretsundaze Summer Opening Party (PICK OF THE WEEKEND LONDON)

Well it’s that time again for what is one of London if the country’s most anticipated dates in the clubbing calendar the annual secretsundaze summer opening party 2013. As has become custom over the last 3 years and wishing to keep the party open air and true to its roots, they are taking the party to Greenwich once again to the newly named Studio 338 for another epic terrace session. The venue has been taken over by new owners who have invested in extra sound and actually extended the terrace significantly allowing for extra capacity which is good news for all, as the last 3 years the party has sold out. This time they will be throwing an after party too at the Bussey in Peckham on the main floor for that locked in after party vibe.

Part 1 – Headlining this daytime event is Detroit innovator Derrick May. From his early days as one third of the Belleville Three with Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, to his production heyday as Rhythim is Rhythim on his legendary Transmat label creating forever-green classics such as ‘Strings Of Life’ and ‘Nude Photo’, there is little that hasn’t been said about Derrick May. And, whilst he has been inactive as a producer for many years, his influence has not waned and through his electrifying DJ sets he has stayed on top – as is heavily reflected in his busy touring schedule. And, as a keen supporter of the secretsundaze label, he’s a dazzling addition to the line-up. Watch him rock the terrace! Also stepping up is Soundstream – live. A one-man hit machine, every Soundstream release on his own self-titled imprint rockets to the top of charts and becomes a major feature in every self-respecting DJ’s set. ‘Live Goes On’, ‘All Night’, ‘Luv Jam’ and now his killer ‘Julie’s Theme’ are no exceptions. He’s DJ’d for secretsundaze before but this will be a rare chance to catch one of his revered live sets. Joining them and representing the UK is rising star Midland (Aus Music), whose first production forays with his flatmate and friend David Kennedy (Pearson Sound) first got him noticed, and who has since gone on to very much carve out his own sound with roots in UK bass and garage as well as house and techno – with the majority of his releases coming through Will Saul’s Aus. His DJ sets have taken him from Fabric to Plastic People to Space to Panorama Bar, and now he joins secretsundaze for the summer opening. Alongside them are residents Giles Smith and James Priestley  whom are on a hot streak of later with gigs around the world in New York, Berlin, Moscow and Rome and they will be representing as only they know how.

Part 2 – New for 2013 is the secretsundaze summer Opening Party Part 2, as secretsundaze throws an after party at The Bussey Building in Peckham for that locked-in after party vibe, for the first time in many years. Coming to the first floor of the excellent Bussey, secretsundaze has invited a few of their favourite cutting-edge artists of recent years in the form of XDB from Greece and Jared Wilson from Detroit. XDB is known as a total DJs’ DJ; playing key parties from Panorama Bar to Freerotation, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of dance music, and also runs the excellent Metrolux imprint. Jared Wilson has been on Giles and James’s radars in the last 18 months with his atmospheric sexy and deadly Detroit vibes producing the anthem ‘ThisSound’ and of course the amazing double pack ‘A Little Moonlight Dancing’ on Skudge earlier this year.

gerald.png

Wigflex x Mimm – A Guy Called Gerald  (Nottingham) – (PICK OF THE WEEKEND MIDLANDS)

A Guy Called Gerald is 25+ years of dance music incarnate. From “Voodoo Ray” in 1988 to “Tronic Jazz” released on Germany’s respected LaboratoryInstinct label in 2010, this man is a self-written bible of dance music. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance when it was jackin’ and has never let up. He is the first UK acid house producer and probably the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and 2 other humans. His collaborations are numerous and their names are huge! The Manchester scene in the late 80s radiated from the Hacienda. It was a place which grew to be a breeding ground for the likes of Laurent Garnier and The Chemical Brothers and in the Summer of Love the Hacienda had a theme tune called Voodoo Ray. It was A Guy Called Gerald’s first release and in 1988 and became a seminal classic that put British house music firmly on the map. As part of 808 State’s first incarnation he co-produced another Hacienda classic, Pacific State. He soon decided to concentrate on his solo project and toured worldwide (and with a quarter of a ton of equipment!) performing live. This is a very rare chance to see a legend like Gerald perform in such an intimate setting and should not be missed!

chibuku.png

Chibuku at East Village Arts Club (Liverpool) – (PICK OF THE WEEK NORTH)

For Chibuku, the night which itself has been pretty much resting since NYE, its hibernation will soon be over. Attention is now focusing on the club’s debut show at the East Village Arts Club on Saturday May 4th as part of the bank holiday weekend, one which sees the party back in its spiritual home. This will be a home which will have undergone a complete modernisation and transformation, whilst retaining the intimate character which has helped shaped Chibuku making it stand as one of the UK’s leading underground parties.

Saturday May 4th is typically eclectic. SBTRKT headlines with a DJ set, the reticent and revered spinner letting his music do the talking, with his eponymous debut album one of the music highlights of 2011. Berlin techno-creators Modeselektor return to Chibuku, the boundary-breaking duo feted for their experimental journeys behind the decks. And Tensnake makes a long overdue return to Liverpool. His ‘Coma Cat’ smash put him on the map and he has not looked back since; a debut album is due this year, and his live show at Chibuku holds huge promise. On a local level, old Chibuku head James Rand is back on deck duty, whilst Dash’s new project, Autocycle, is also on show. Brand new night Polka brings its residents to the party; the student-run collective bringing a new edge to the city’s vibrant club culture. Make sure you don’t miss out and get your tickets now.

The Garden Party at The Faversham

This May Bank Holiday, The Garden Party will return to The Faversham, Leeds, for the first in a set of three events continuing its reputation for hosting some of the best parties around and line ups that are second to none. With the likes of Tale of Us, who since then the pair have had a collaborative release and continued to tour the world bringing their infused and unique sounds to us all through their celebrated Live and DJ sets. With the creative force that is Jimmy Edgar coming to the Garden Party this year. As well as photography and design, Edgar is pretty good at music too- in fact he was only 18 when he effectively joined the Warp family. Edgar’s talents stretch far and wide as he continued to culminate and perfect his funk inspired electronic sound. Also joining are Belfast duo and self professed 80’s inspired analog house advocates, Bicep. Not only known by their music but also their infamous blog, Feel My Bicep, exploring an array of music but primarily disco, house and techno infused cuts. Their music is renowned for it’s influences from the aforementioned genres, current but with a deep rooted respect and understanding of the development of electronic music as we know it today. With its beginnings eight years ago in Bristol, the Futureboogie DJs and parties have become highly regarded in their home town, across the UK, and beyond. After travelling the world bringing their selections to us all, they are going to be setting foot in Leeds for your enjoyment, Make sure you get down here to see these and other artists.

louche.png

Louche & System Terrace Party (Leeds) (PICK OF THE WEEK NORTH – 2)

System and Louche unite again in 2013, back at the Mint Warehouse for another hat trick of show stopping day and night parties. Last season they welcomed over Ricardo Villalobos, Visionquest, Zip, George Fitzgerald, A:rpia:r, Bicep and many more, and for the three parties this year they’ve secured three equally naughty line-ups.

Berlin born DJ, producer and label owner Ben Klock is without doubt one of the most significant characters in techno’s recent history. Playing sets full of hypnotic, deep and heavy grooves, releasing records on Ostgut Ton and curating his label Klockworks have earned him an excellent international reputation over the last few years. Not to mention his residency at the Berghain since it’s opening in 2004. Also when it comes to DJ sets, Cassy doesn’t subscribe to a certain genre, but instead plays right across the board, from house to smooth deep techno. Panorama Bar, Rex Club and Trouw all witness her regularly, Cassy now holding residencies at all three of the Champions League European venues. As a producer she has a diverse body of work on such highly-regarded labels as Playhouse, Perlon and Cocoon. They are introducing Mr Dez Andres, associate of the late great J Dilla, DJ from 90’s outfit Slum Village, and nowadays producer of some of contemporary house’s most essential tracks. His music crosses over from house to disco to hip hop, released on labels such as Moody’s Mahogani and his own imprint La Vida. If you’re not familiar with ‘New For U’ from last year then you’ve probably been living under the sea! Spinning his trademark funk, disco, house and hip hop on the terrace, you can look forward to a good old al fresco dance. Ramon Lisandro Quezada aka DJ Qu is another A-grade musician to come out of NYC in recent times, and is responsible for spearheading a new wave of East Coast producers alongside his friends Jus Ed, Levon Vincent and Fred P.Underground Quality, Desolat and Curle have all released his smooth deep house over the years, and he’s a top shelf DJ. Line-up complete! With Flux, Teknicolor, LoucheandSytem residents all supporting, plus top quality Funktion 1 sound on the terrace and a brand new DJ booth in room one, this summer’s parties at Mint Warehouse look better than ever.

Naïve x Feel my Bicep Showcase at Make Do (Glasgow)

Naive proudly pair with Bicep to present a showcase of artists ranging across a broad spectrum of electronic music, with the Belfast natives joined by Steffi and DarkSky.

This special event curated by Bicep covers the dark corners of the PanoramaBar with resident Steffi’s appearance and stretches out to sleazy Brooklyn basement house, the possible inspiration for DarkSky’s upcoming release on Mister SaturdayNight. The ‘In Brackets’ EP representing a true break from the group’s previous work. Of course, holding the night together will be the curators themselves. To say Bicep have gone from strength to strength in the past year may be an embarrassing pun, but it’s undoubtedly true. The thriving blog is now almost a caveat to their multiple releases and the breakthrough ‘You / Don’t Do It’ EP on AusMusic, which pushed the Belfast duo up playlists and bills alike. Not showing any signs of fatigue, their set to release their new EP ‘Stash’ on AusMusic in mid April, a timely fit with this showcase event
