Showing absolutely no sign of taking his foot off the gas, Helsinki’s Rony Rex strides back to the fore with another head-turning, bass-centric club heater on independent Finnish dance imprint Youth Control. Following the well-received arrival of ‘Limbo’ featuring US lyricist Dances With White Girls, Rony is back to deliver another undeniably potent club weapon in ‘True Religion’. A record that will instantly pique the eardrums of anyone with a penchant for catchy vocal hooks, creative arrangement and attitude-laden musicality, ‘True Religion’ ticks all the boxes to become a discernible club and radio hit. Showcasing the depths of Rony’s ever-expansive creativity, it has a little bit of everything from differing rhythmic phases to keep you guessing – ranging from house to breakbeat – and lyrics you’ll find yourself repeating at all hours of the day to full-bodied bassline grooves, flagrant synth progressions and creative sampling flare.
To celebrate the release of his latest bonafide rump-shaker, Rony Rex shares an intimate selection of some of his favourite cuts:
Hudson Mohawke & Nikki Nair ft. Tayla Parx – Set The Roof
I’m a sucker for music that doesn’t take itself too seriously; pure fun. I’ve been loving Nikki’s and Hudmo’s output lately, especially this one – it works like a charm on a festival stage and in a gritty club.
1tbsp ft. Mietze Conte – No Nein
This track converted an Uber driver to electronic music instantly. No lie. A new project of emotional width by Australian producer Golden Vessel, aka 1tbsp.
Julio Bashmore – Bubblin
Intense Moog action. That vocal sample – a strong comeback by Julio Bashmore. This one has become a hit on my radio show on Finland’s national channel YleX.
Bodysync & Shinichiro Yokota – Hard Glance
Adventure music. It’s probably also a world record in the amount of rave loon samples used. In one of my sets, we tried a thing with the audience where you had to count them. We failed
Confidence Man – Holiday (Erol Alkan OOO Rework)
This heater from last summer is still on. Justified, as Confidence Man with their ultra-naive lyrical output combined with Erol’s failsafe club touch, is a combination you don’t run past. Bold. Works by the bonfire too.
Special Request ft. Novelist – Sliver
Paul Woolford doesn’t miss. The good old tempo change is rare these days. Glad to see it making a comeback. Excellent performance by Novelist, too; a hard-hitter like this is a rarity on Peggy Gou’s Gudu Records, but it makes its case.
Doss – Drugs
I only keep a handful of records on show in my house, and one of them is ‘Pop The Glock’ by Uffie on Ed Banger. After the blog house era, Uffie had a long hiatus – and in recent years, she’s been on a roll. This remake of Uffie’s 2019 pop anthem ‘Drugs’ by LUCKYME® tastemaker Doss, who’s also a favourite, went straight to the set. The bassline is intense in all the best ways.
Eden Burns – Multitool
I’m not one to usually go with readymade DJ tools; I like to trick shit up on the fly. But this one stands by its title, fitting really well into any set. It’s a simple go-to weapon for building tension.
Daktyl & Benni Ola – Matrix
Surreal tune. The bassline comes from nowhere and just keeps on grinding. A rabbit hole-type beat. TOKiMONSTA’s Young Art Records at its finest. Disclaimer: This pick may or may not have to do with the fact that I just finished a tune with Benni Ola, which will be out soon.
Rony Rex ft. Dances With White Girls – Limbo
It’s essential to allow yourself to go as dumb as possible – lead synth straight from 2008, voice memo sirens, topped with drums that can make you re-examine your interests. This is the essential 20-minute jam. We had fun. PS: I tried Limbo once and almost died. This is the soundtrack.
