Renegade Riddims: Karistocat

Inspired by her London upbringing, Karistocat is one of the most unique and dynamic artists to come out of the city. Revered for her deep and powerful sound of electronica blending Drum & Bass, Techno and Electro her style leads to sets that absorb and ignite.

Growing up in London’s district of Camden Town, Karistocat has a distinct style of bringing an alternative flair to her DJ sets, informed by her beginnings as an alternative and Drum & Bass DJ. Since 2011, Karistocat’s evolving style caught the attention of London’s Shorebitch collective and she became resident supporting Modeselektor, to UK Garage heavyweights DJ Luck & MC Neat, Artful Dodger, So Solid Crew and grime’s D Double E.

From working on the pirate radio documentary Drowned City featuring Sam Supplier and exploring pirate radio, she also went further to work with BBC Radio 6 on a series of specialised programmes on the history of Drum & Bass and Jungle. Karistocat’s story started at the tender age of 13 after witnessing DJ EZ and Wookie at an under-18s rave at Bagleys, which led to countless nights raving in London’s clubland including The End, Matter and Bar Rumba, experiencing first hand some of the UK’s biggest DJs in the most respected clubs.

Her love for bass music has led to her selections having a combination of deep, brooding liquid and rolling Drum & Bass, with elements of early 90’s hardcore, gabber, UK garage, techno with a distinct ‘London’ edge. It’s the prime force behind her career, one that thus far has not only taken her to an array of clubs (Ministry of Sound, Fire, Lightbox, Bussey) and festival hotspots.

From landing residencies in her home city to spinning sets in front of 8,000 people at Reading & Leeds, to festivals such as Wilderness, and sharing the stage with Goldie for Champagne Steam Rooms at Bestival, her sets ignite dance-floors and festivals alike. Over the years Karistocat has dropped her distinctive selection at countless events across the UK and represented internationally in Europe, including Paris, Rome, Vienna, Cannes, and Ibiza. Karistocat is a Drum & Bass DJ with an alternative sensibility and punk outlook.

Karistocat is also one of our resident Data Transmission Radio DJ’s with a monthly show on the 4th Friday of each month (her new show comes this Friday!) called PULSE in which she not only explores Drum & Bass and Jungle but also pushes delves into Techno and Breaks and everything in between. Now, she joins our Renegade Riddims series, like she doesn’t have enough on her plate as it is! I personally have a lot of time and respect for Karistocat, she’s a grafter and her mixes are always really interesting and versatile and definitely keep you on your toes!

With her first release ‘Babalon’ on The One Recordings and having her first Radio 1 play opening René LaVice’s Drum and Bass show with remix from DnB pioneer Blame, we are only seeing the beginning of this rising talent’s evolution. Karistocat’s outlook is to showcase an alternative sensibility to the Drum & Bass community with a punk influence.
