Renegade Master: NC-17

NC-17 is a Drum & Bass producer and label owner of Grindhou5e Audio, based out of Toronto, Canada. The namesake refers to the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) rating system which undertakes that an NC-17 rating film would be one based around violence, sex, aberrational behaviour, drug abuse or any other element that most parents would consider too intense for viewing by their children.

He has been DJing for around 20 years now and started to produce music in 2005. With releases on Viper Recordings, Renegade Hardware, Mainframe, All Sorts, DSCI4, MAC II, SOM Music, Proximity, and many more, he formed his own label, Grindhou5e Audio in 2012. While the imprint was still in its infancy, it almost immediately featured tracks from the likes of State Of Mind, The Upbeats, Mr Explicit, and Smooth.

With more releases scheduled for this year, he shows no signs of slowing down. His track ‘God Complex’ was recently included on Rebel Music’s debut album ‘Rebel One‘ which is a wicked selection of 18 tracks all brought together in order to raise funds for the NHS, grab it from here

Today NC-17 joins the ranks of our Renegade Masters with a mix made up entirely of his own tracks, dubs, unreleased material and collabs with loads of other artists. Show your support by signing up to his Patreon here

Sum up this mix in 10 words…

A showcase of all my forthcoming and new NC-17 songs

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

My favorite track is ‘Stranger than Fiction’ forthcoming on Ram Records. That one has a special place in my heart. My baby…

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

I think the special ingredient on the mix was the fact I let my songs breathe. I am known for my fast, quicker mixing. But since I am doing a showcase the more progressive approach is what worked the best.

What’s the best gig you’ve played ?

The best gig… Very hard question. Couldn’t name you one. As there are so many that were great that have different meanings

What was the first gig you played?

The first gig I played was in 2002 and my first release was in 2006 for Circle Recordings and Mac 2.. (they came weeks upon weeks each other)

What have you got coming up?

Lots of very different live streams coming up of course Ram House Party and Stamina. There are more but I can’t just announce them yet 🙂

When and where was your first rave?

1998 Toronto Mach 1 with Kenny Ken & Stevie Hyper D

What old skool tracks never leave your record bag/USB?

Matrix ‘Sleepwalker’ (Virus) or Shimon ‘Hush Hush’ (Ram)

What is your favourite dancefloor in the UK? (Past or Present)

Sadly Never been 🙁

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?

Lots of very big projects coming out on Dispatch, Ram & Program… Also, Grindhouse (my label) is only available as a Patreon membership label limited to only 50 members. This means moving forward all Grindhouse releases will only be available limited to members. You will not be able to purchase the music anywhere else. I feel this way it gives the label a more underground feel & makes it less disposable…Every release will feel special to members and exclusive to them. Almost like an underground dub club. Plus the whole Grindhouse image and underground vibe go hand and hand. So it’s a perfect fit.
