QO, Kutlo & Julia Marks link up for ‘Anima’ on Hoofbeats Music

The latest release to come out on burgeoning Czech Drum & Bass imprint Hoofbeats Music sees label boss QO team up with Slovakian prodigy Kutlo. Released on Wednesday 3rd May 2023, their collaboration on ‘Anima’ is further embraced by the talented Russian singer Julia Marks, who injects a haunting vocal influence throughout the track.

You can easily be forgiven for thinking ‘Anima’ is a pre-watershed mainline affair with its uplifting intro and softly rising melodies. Still, it doesn’t take long to show its true colours. Sliding off the end of a soulful vocal hook – things quickly take a turn towards the dark and stormy end of the Drum & Bass spectrum with the introduction of sawing bass and electrifying drum sequencing. Its tornado-like onslaught of slicing harmonies and urgent rhythms sweep in hard and fast, leaving nothing in their wake as furious collisions of tricky breaks and violent snares rattle off each other like baseball-sized hailstones bouncing off a tin roof. The continuous grip of Julia’s vocals keeps you from spinning too far out of the storm’s eye, bleeding in and out of occasional introspective soundscapes before throwing you head-first back into what are an undeniably savage six minutes of adulterated Drum & Bass wizardry.

If you like your Drum & Bass heavy, dark and loud, then fear not as ‘Anima’ will tick every last box and will be well on its way to becoming your new best friend!
