Paleblu & Kray drops ‘Same Mistakes’ EP on PullUp

Ryan Gonsalves and Kian Chong, better known by their stage names Paleblu and Kray, met after being paired for an impromptu b2b at a Love Music Hate Racism event at The Cause in Tottenham back in 2020. Not exactly new to the Drum & Bass scene, they’ve both racked up previous solo appearances at festivals including Hospitality On The Beach, InsideOut and InItTogether. Since their first brief encounter, the destined duo haven’t looked back, quickly finding that it was more than their relative mixing styles that blended effortlessly. They soon embarked on writing music together and their forthcoming ‘Same Mistakes’ EP showcases the fruits of this collective labour. Their maiden voyage is perfectly at home on Cardiff-based record label PullUp Recordings, who’re responsible for recent scalding-hot recent releases from DRZ and the recent viral release from BSEARL. The release comes complete with a swashbuckling Swansea-based launch party on Thursday the 29th of September at Bambu, while Paleblu & Kray’s accomplished 4-track offering lands on the 30th of September and it’s certainly worth the wait!

The title track ‘Same Mistakes’ opens with swirling pads, shuffling beats and introspective lyrics provided by Paleblu himself alongside Kray’s atmospheric production. This subtle intro is quickly kicked into high gear, courtesy of a pulsating bassline and Ryan’s subtle yet memorable melody. Presenting the clear versatility of this developing duo, we are treated to a 16-bar verse alongside this catchy earworm of a hook. This one lands in stores on the 16th of September, whetting the whistle of any potential listener.

Next up, ‘Motions’ features the vocals of up-and-coming Kent-based vocalist Coltham, who showcases an effortless vocal style which at times feels almost spoken. This youthful nonchalance sits perfectly atop a dancy groove, trickling piano chords and rattling bass grunts which culminate in a fitting dancefloor smasher to see out this Summer in style.

The penultimate track ‘Summerhus’ has arguably the most measured intro of the bunch, with warm organ, percussive pops and processed vocals setting the tone from the outset. This suspenseful intro quickly descends into a pulsing soundscape, with rolling breaks, cascading harmonic elements and modulating bass as the order of the day.

Finally, ‘Edge’ rounds out this debut EP with some seriously tasteful production, featuring vocal licks that bend with a guitar-like tone, throbbing, gliding basslines and quivering synth pads.

Today we premiere ‘Motions’ (feat. Coltham) which you can check out below. The ‘Same Mistakes’ EP drops on Friday 30th September, make sure you grab a copy for your collection from here!
