Dub Wars Production Battle Clash Tournament

Share

The genius’s over at Rebel Music have announced their Dub Wars Production Battle Clash Tournament. This is a new concept, one which I don’t think has happened yet in the new world of live streams. Over the last few weeks of the COVID19 lockdown, we have seen a magnetude of DJs doing live streams from their homes and studios. Some people are getting bored of them, other people, like ourselves, are loving them and the extents that some are going to make their live streams a bit different from the norm.

In a world such as ours is at the present time, it comes down to your level of creativity and what you can do that will make yourself stick out from what everyone is doing to stay relevant and showcase your skills.

Queue Rebel Music and their production battle. A brand new initiative for producers to show their talents at creating new dubs. Kicking off this Sunday (10th May) at 9pm Rebel Music will draw their first round. Artists involved in this are: Creatures, Dark Ops, Hadley, HLZ, Ill Truth, Inner Terrain, Kolectiv, MD, missledz, Objectiv, Screamarts, Taelimb, Tephra & Arkoze, Wingz, Wreckless and Volatile Cycle.

Here’s the outline: There are 16 artists. They will be drawn into 8 matches. Each match is given a sample pack of 10 sounds which the producers have to make into a dub.

The rules are: each artist must use every sound in their dub at least once. The track must be over 3 minutes. They all have 5 days to hand in their finished track.

There are no other rules!

The dubs will be posted on the Native Instruments Metapop Community page with a like to vote system.

People can vote for their favourite dub over a 24 hour period. The winners will be announced and then there will be the draw for the next round. Quarter-Finals with 8 artists, Semi-Finals with 4 and then into the final round to find the first Dub Wars Champion!

All tournament battles will be hosted on the Native Instrument website (follow the Rebel Music Facebook or Instagram accounts for further details). Commentary and insights with the battlers will be provided by Chef and also Darrell from Invaderz. They will also be joined by some guests on the lives such as MC GQ, Benny L, Smithy (Total Science/The Sauce), Si from 2 Bad Mice, Klute and Illmatika!

We got a few words from most of the artists about the current situation and the upcoming clash…

INNER TERRAIN

How are you feeling about the current situation?

Mixed feelings actually, some days not the best. Some days I just want to bend the rules a little. It’s a strange time.

What are doing to keep busy?

Music, exercise and podcasts.

What are you most looking forward to about the clash?

Just the chance to actually put my skills to the test against a few established artists. The challenge of making something from pre selected samples making it my own then playing it head to head against these guys excites me.

HLZ

How are you feeling about the current situation?

The current situation is crazy and unfortunately sad, but it will be interesting to see the artistic outcome during these times, especially for D&B.

What are doing to keep busy?

I’m keeping myself busy making a lot of music, luckily, after first weeks of shock-like anyone else, I’m feeling very inspired.

What are you most looking forward to about the clash?

I’m really looking forward to the competition, MJ style ah. Honestly, it is a really cool initiative because brings back a bit to those times when producers got a killer dub out every week to be tested on a murderous sound system. This is gonna be fun!

TAELIMB

How are you feeling about the current situation?

The current situation is obviously awful and has been tragic for many people around the world but in some ways, I feel it is bringing us together more. It’s forcing us to reflect on what’s important in our lives, our passions, family and other relationships. Hopefully, when its all over we will retain some of this and not just fall back into the capitalist grind.

What are doing to keep busy?

Trying to keep my business afloat and pay the rent lol.

Also just focusing on music as much as possible, keeping up with family and exercising.

Can’t lie alcohol consumption has raised a fair bit too though lol

What are you most looking forward to about the clash?

Looking forward to hearing what everyone brings to the table, going to be exciting, it’s a wide range of artists so should be really interesting!

Oh yeah and winning, winning big time!

ARKOZE (Tephra & Arkoze)

How are you feeling about the current situation?

The current situation is terrible and very sad, so I’m trying to look at the positives that are coming out of it, such as people caring for one another. This is shown through things like people delivering food to those in need who aren’t able to leave their homes as they are a high risk. Hopefully, when we return to some sort of normality the kindness will continue.

What are you doing to keep busy?

I’m working from home during the day, followed by music during the evening. I’m trying to stay fit by going on bike rides and doing some stuff indoors, but increased drinking is probably counteracting this.

What are you looking most forward to about the clash?

To be honest, just to be part of it is the most exciting thing for me. It feels like something completely new and different, so to be part of it is wicked.

TEPHRA

How are you feeling about the current situation?

The situation we are in is crap to be honest, it’s very sad to hear about people losing loved ones and my thoughts go out to those who have lost… but at the same time, it also seems to be making people connect on a better level which is the way the world should be…we are all in this together which can’t be forgotten! Huge respect going out to the NHS for what they are doing!

What are you doing to keep busy?

Well I am off work so music and exercise is helping to keep me sane as well as connecting with family as much as I can.. but I can’t lie alcohol consumption has gone up massively – AA might be busy after all this!

What are you looking most forward to about the clash?

I think it’s bringing together a lot of talented people and having that pressure to create will bring the best out of people! It’s something different, and great to be apart from this idea – Big up Ben OB1 and all the others taking part!

SCREAMARTS

How are you feeling about the current situation and what are you doing to keep busy?

Staying inside most of the time is not optimal. But I try to make the best of it by making lots of music playing video games and spending lots of time with my girlfriend.

What are you looking most forward to about the clash?

Just another excuse for doing music with an interesting twist.

MISSLEDZ

How are you feeling about the current situation?

I’m finding it quite challenging, as I know many others are. It’s made me even more homesick, as most of my family are in Australia.

However, it’s been a good opportunity to look within, evaluate my lifestyle and foster my wellbeing. I’m very thankful to the key workers looking after the community and keeping us safe, and my heart goes out to anyone affected by the pandemic.

What are doing to keep busy?

I was working up until the end of April so that was keeping me relatively busy until now. I have been cooking a lot more though, which is nice, and I’ve had extra time to work on music, too.

I want to attempt to learn a bit of Dutch and Czech. I have recently started trying to learn Dutch – it’s really hard!

What are you most looking forward to about the clash?

I’m really excited for the challenge. I enjoy pushing myself with my production and this is a great opportunity to do this.

Can’t wait to hear everyone’s tunes!

DARK OPS (Section)

How are you feeling about the current situation?

It’s an uncertain time which is making me feel anxious yet I have experienced first hand, examples of human kindness and empathy that I haven’t seen before. I hope this continues moving forwards.

What are doing to keep busy?

I work full-time as a Physiotherapist in the NHS. This has added to my anxiety, on one hand, however, I feel privileged to be able to continue working where others haven’t.

What are you most looking forward to about the clash?

Everyone I know who makes music uses it as an escape from other aspects of their lives. The clash is the perfect excuse to bury ourselves in what we love doing, with the added element of theatre, which makes this project so unique. It’s a genuine honour to be involved.

CREATURES

How are you feeling about the current situation?

Oddly productive, it’s weird times so I’m trying to stay creative!

What are you doing to keep busy?

Working full time and mixdowns

What are you most looking forward to about the clash?

The unexpected dubs I guess I think everyone is capable of doing some mad stuff and like most tournaments, it probably won’t go the way you’d expect! Exciting times!

ILL TRUTH (Haden)

How are you feeling about the current situation?

I feel weird about the current situation, I’m sure a lot of people do as well. It’s awful what has happened so far and I’m hopeful that things will get better soon but yeah, just weird to be honest. An unprecedented global event.

What are you doing to keep busy?

I’ve been working from home still, exercising and keeping busy with as much music as possible. Myself and Bluejay have been playing a lot of Jenga also (we’re trying to see how close to the world record we can get haha)

What are you most looking forward to about the clash?

I’m looking forward to doing something that feels like it’s more on a level playing field. I find a lot of remix competitions, DJ competitions, anything where the public have a say in typically have some form of ‘popularity’ swaying the voting because of how many likes they can get. I’m looking forward to people making an honest vote without an artist name or fan base controlling votes. It’s about the music, like it should be.

That and the fact that there are some sick people involved in this and I actually can’t wait to hear what everyone comes up with.

WINGZ

How are you feeling about the current situation?

On and off really. One day I wake up feeling bad and missing the club life and my friends, the other day I’m perfectly fine. At least I’m having a decent amount of sleep.

What are you doing to keep busy?

Primarily working on tunes or sounds, play games with my friends over zoom, reminisce about the times before this and silently weep.

What are you looking most forward to about the clash?

I like a good challenge. Lots of talent and sick producers are in this, I’m sure there will be some nice tunes. Always fun to see what everyone will make out of the samples provided.

KOLECTIV – (Kerim)

How are you feeling about the current situation?

Occasionally I feel annoyed, angry, impatient but nothing new there. I’m thankful to be with my family and to still be in a job. I don’t think too far ahead on anything right now.

What are doing to keep busy?

Spending time with my daughter and my better half, playing video games, making small loops to get inspired to start an album project and watching a shit load of Netflix and Prime.

What are you most looking forward to about the clash?

Listening to what lockdown has done to inspire my peers. Being part of something a little different that hasnt been done before in this way. Not concerned to be overly competitive but another part of me is like, yeah it’s time for war bruv.

WRECKLESS

How are you feeling about the current situation?

There is lots of anxiety around at the moment and just trying to stay positive and try and get a sense of routine rolling. The longer this goes on the more people it hits personally and the more grateful everyone is for all the people that are still working to help NHS and pharmacies and stuff like that. So feeing grateful for those people to be honest, feeling a bit weird too.

What are you doing to keep busy?

Haha recently my wife and I did a jigsaw puzzle. It was honestly 2 full weekends work lol. Proper geek business. Love it.

What are you looking most forward to about the clash?

Hearing how one set of samples can be taken in different directions. Love seeing that creativity. Looking forward to seeing the draw, it will be interesting to see if people adapt their style a bit depending on the people they are up against. The mind games…. are they going minimal? Should I go minimalist too? All that sort of thing 👍

MD

How are you feeling about the current situation?

On a whole, it’s scary times indeed but personally I’m feeling pretty good. I have moved back to my parents’ farm in Yorkshire which is very secluded so I’m lucky enough to have the chance to go outside.

What are you doing to keep busy?

Well I’m currently building a small lake in one of the fields with my little digger which is taking up a lot of time. Apart from that just working on my car/bike is keeping me on my toes.

What are you looking forward to most about the clash?

I’m looking forward to pushing myself to get tracks finished in such a short amount of time which means no going round in circles with the final mix, I think it will help me trust my judgement a little more with the deadline so close.

Let’s get ready for the first ever Dub Wars!!
