Cardinal Sound launches Archway Records
For many of the worlds musicians, this year has been unprecedented. It has left them trying to find new opportunities and ways to keep themselves relevant and busy. With loads of artists struggling to make ends meet after the loss of club nights and festivals, more and more are discovering ways to relieve them of what’s inside their heads. The amount of creativity musicians have inside them is immense. I don’t just mean mixing and making records, their brains are wired differently to others. This has led many of them grappling with keeping it all inside, the creativity needs to go somewhere. Launching your own label is one way of keeping you and your brain active and giving your music an outlet.
Archway Records has been set up by Reprezent Radio and Rinse FM regular Cardinal Sound. The label is looking to break new ground within the scene, through an added focus on incorporating elements of genres of left-field bass music.
The London-based producer has been a club and festival mainstay for the last 4 years. After a brief period of time away as the music scene came to terms with the COVID 19 pandemic, he returns with Archway Records. The team behind the new imprint has some really exciting collabs in the pipeline along with a backlog of lockdown-induced music.
“The experience we’ve all recently gone through, and its impact on the scene, has been eye opening for all of us. Personally, I’ve tried to take it as a massive opportunity to do something I should have done 3 or 4 years ago. To collaborate with the friends I’ve made from being in the scene and on radio, and to look for Drum & Bass and D&B-influenced music in places that might not be so obvious.
I’ve been on Reprezent for 3 years. So searching for and showcasing music from new or under appreciated artists is second nature to me. This, alongside my role programming the electronic music stages at the now Sony-backed Strawberries & Creem Festival, gives me an amazing platform on which to bring some new blood to the forefront.
Just because we are specialising in Drum & Bass, that doesn’t mean we don’t want to hear a variety of tempos. As long as it’s got a D&B influence, we’re open to anything. If I hear a mental 110bpm Jungle demo, as long as the vibe is there, I’ll be looking to sign it.” – Cardinal Sound
Archway Records’ label management team consists of Frazer Robinson alongside Keiran Lawler, Jimmy Ostler and Alyx Hatton.
