Back From The Dead: YFN9000 Rewires The Machine On The ‘Afterlife Revisited’ EP

Share

Some tracks refuse to stay buried. YFN9000 has gone digging through his own back catalogue, dragged three technoid weapons up from the grave and given them a brand new heartbeat. The result is the ‘Afterlife Revisited’ EP, out now on his own imprint YFN9000 Music, and it hits like a cold slap of warehouse air at 3am.

If the name YFN9000 hasn’t crossed your radar yet, allow us. This is one of many guises of Maciej Ruminkiewicz, a producer who also answers to Roominsky, Junglist 1996 and The Mr R. The man is a whole rave in one body. His music has that unsettling, cinematic pull, so much so that filmmaker Ryan Swantek recruited him to soundtrack the infamous viral horror short “Panther Ridge”, a clip now sitting on a frankly ridiculous 2.9 million views. Think the queasy dread of Gaspar Noe’s ‘Irreversible’, which, funnily enough, was scored by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk. Fitting company, because just like Bangalter flips from horror scores to timeless house, YFN flips from dread to dancefloor without breaking a sweat.

The backstory is proper folklore. As a high schooler, Maciej was already spinning at illegal raves in post-civil-war Bosnia and Herzegovina, parties so unhinged the chairs were literally flying across the room. More recently, Nomark Records clocked the talent and officially released his YFN remix of Amon Tobin‘s ‘Metropole’. The pedigree is real.

Now to the EP itself. These three cuts are reworks of tracks from his 2019 album ‘Cybernetics’, originally dropped under the alias Your Favorite Neighbor on Polish net-label Splitterkor Rekords Dziwko. Consider this his line in the sand, a statement that the industrial hardcore gabber roots are being left behind for something sharper and more technical. This is not a lazy remaster. Transients have been sharpened, mastering scrubbed clean, fresh elements bolted on and old parts rearranged so the whole thing breathes and flows.

And the sound? Cold, mechanical, gloriously repetitive rhythms locked to low-slung bass and syncopated drums. It is built for both Drum & Bass rooms and techno basements, a soundtrack for a dystopian cyberpunk future and the sweaty underground present all at once. Play it in a rooftop set, unleash it in a warehouse, let it swallow a dark room whole. It belongs wherever the bass is loud and the ceiling is dripping.

Fully DIY from production and mastering to artwork and distribution, released independently through Bandcamp, this is one man against the machine, and winning!

The ‘Afterlife Revisited’ EP landed today, Friday, 7th August. Do yourself a favour, stream it, turn it up and grab a copy on Bandcamp. The afterlife has never sounded this heavy.
