After the success of his ‘This Is Acid’ single earlier in 2021, Lorenzo de Blanck is back for more house brilliance with ‘Okay’ while Ben Kims steps up with a fine remix.
The Italian is a Moon Harbour regular who knows how to make his tracks really pop. He is a busy DJ who runs his own intimate underground party Simple back home but is just as used to sweating it out in the Sankeys Basement or playing Privilege Ibiza. The vinyl obsessive has also served up his sounds on Hottrax and Saved Records and is now back with more high-grade house.
‘Okay’ teases and pleases as it unfolds. There are playful drum loops to get you moving,arps that twinkle like stars and rugged chord vamps that help hammer home the groove. It’s a big track with a big heart but also plenty of subtle details that make it all the more essential: the wiggly acid lines, smart vocal stabs and a well-crafted drop are all icing on a delicious cake.
The remix comes from Ben Kim who is riding high off the back of his remix of rock classic ‘Somebody to Love,’ which was an instant Beatport number one on REALM Records. He is an Italian who is a core part of the new school with fresh grooves and a wide array of influences. His version is stripped right back to a super tight drum and kick combo that makes you move. The brisling percussion and turbocharged bassline add extra drive and futuristic synths that make this a real head-down classic.
How do you know each other? When did you meet for the first time? How did the collaboration come about?
We met at a party a few years ago, and have stayed in touch and friends over the years from there. I’ve been looking for a remix for my latest track “Okay”. I asked to Ben and he didn’t think twice!
How would you describe the remix, Lorenzo?
I love this remix, that’s exactly what I want to play right now! It’s a real bomb!
Lorenzo, the original track was released last year on Moon Harbour. Have you been able to try it out in front of an audience? How was that?
I managed to play it, before the clubs were closed again due to the pandemic. I always play my new tracks in my DJ sets, I try them, I watch the reaction of the crowd, I hear how it sounds and I make the necessary adjustments. Sometimes I play unreleased tracks that then officially come out even years later!
Ben, what do you enjoy producing more? Original tracks or remixes?
To tell the truth it depends on the ideas that I find myself in front of, it depends on the periods and the ideas I have in my head during those periods
