Reviewed: EGG’s 16th Birthday

Share

Kings Cross institution Egg London celebrated it’s 16th birthday recently, inviting a host of techno stars to party with, including Nicole Moudaber, ARTBAT and Hito among others. We were in attendance to see how it all went down.

Stepping into Egg London is like entering into a wonderful techno maze, with twists and surprises around every corner. Up the stairs into the Middle Floor we find Japanese selector Hito tearing into her 2 hour set. Lights flash hard from the low ceiling, as she treats the crowd to the acid notes of ‘Lost (Robert Capuano Remix)’ by Alex Mine. Hito captures the essence of the evening with deep, brooding techno. This is summed up by her last track ‘In the Shade’ by Spartaque, a rising Ukrainian producer featured on Monika Kruse’s Terminal M Records.

The scene is set for the ever-impressive Nicole Moudaber to take to the decks. The MOOD boss rips into the set with Wehbha’s ‘Third Wave’, a Drumcode release that unleashes deep surges of bass into the crowd. Things take a darker twist as she mixes in ‘Floating In The Red River’ which takes you on a percussive, spacey mind bending journey. Her closer ‘Venezia’ by Malandra Jr. continues down a similar vein, and the crowd respond well hands reaching for the ceiling. After taking a well earned round of applause Nicole ducks off stage and into the night.

Down in the Basement Ukrainian duo ARTBAT, made of Artur and Batish, are making their U.K. debut. They bring a melodic feel to proceedings, fans of Tale Of Us are sure to enjoy ARTBAT’s atmospheric techno sets. The highlight of the set was the duo spinning ‘All I Need To Get High (Ae:ther Dreaming Dub Remix)’ by Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons. The vocal refrain playing against the heavy percussive dub elements, washed out onto the crowd on the swelling sub bass notes. After a great set one would imagine it won’t be long until we see ARTBAT back in the U.K., doing what they do best.

Another stellar party at Egg London and data transmission hope this club has many more birthdays and memorable moments to come!
