Label: Alfa Romero Score: 7/10
Consistency is without doubt a focal point of what makes Alfa Romero so special and it’s with some delight that we can report that their latest is another winner in that sense. Rather than simply shedding the spotlight on one producer this time, Alfabox Volume 1 is a 5 track V/A that reminds us of the label’s shrewd house capabilities.
Much like the label itself, the release is a very Italian affair. Refined, classy and sophisticated to the last, it bears all the hallmarks of the country’s current fascination with all things house. And while the producers aren’t household names, there’s enough going on here to suggest that they’re capable of making the grade on an international level. Anthony Megaro’s ‘’Sensation’’ is first up – and it really hits the spot. Full of gliding bells and ominous overtones, it really gets going when the firm 4/4 kick enters the equation.
Cardace & Perazzini’s ‘’Drinkin in NY’’ makes for a solid tool, but Lancaster’s ‘’Mental Moments’’ – while not quite as mental as the title suggests – is the highlight on the package. Karasho’s peak-time flavoured ‘’Siboney’’ gives it a good run for its money in the epic stakes, and the trippy tonic that is Mazu’s ‘’By The Gun Behind’’ offers up a splendid and enticing ending. Offering plenty of new artists for to keep an eye for this is a great showcase for the artists on offer. Let’s hope they continue in the same vein!
