After a brief hiatus we return with some essential stripped back, raw, basslines and grooves to get you thawing out those boogeying muscles as the temperature begins to rise. With the summer now in full swing, new music is being released thick and fast and there is no short supply of quality music on offer with a variety of new and well established labels hoping to find themselves as firm fixtures in the record bags of the scenes biggest players. For July I’ll provide you with my 5 essential tracks and the tried and tested number that I’m reaching for currently.
Archie Hamilton – Time EP
Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton returns to his own label with two gorgeous productions inspired by sunshine and emotion. Opening track Vadella was put together during his time at the end of the Ibiza season last summer spent in the beautiful Cala Vadella, the 12 minute tune features lush tones, sophisticated percussion and a mesmerising bassline, transporting you to the Balearic scenery of pine trees and blue ocean. 21514 is the highlight of the release, with its floating synths that combine with mean bass, dark and light moments coming together to great effect. Romania’s Priku provides a tripped out remix to cap things off.
Various Artists – Infuse 008
FUSE London sister label INFUSE returns with a quality new various artists EP featuring FUSE favourites and up and coming talent alike. Seb Zito & Rich Nxt deliver a typical prime time percussive tribal roller with Serve. Newcomer from Birmingham Pat Ondebaak’s track One is a fine tune with its jungle influenced samples and hypnotising bassline. On the flip Antony DiFrancesco collaborates with Dutch wizard Ferro and brings the intensity on Toasted with twisted electronics. Inner completes the release and returns to the label with a roller of the highest degree. Rhythmic beats and a vocal sample to leave you hooked.
Ricardo Villalobos – Who Are We?
Ricardo Villalobos makes his eagerly anticipated return to the Frankfurt based label Raum…musik with his first release of 2015 Who are We?. The enigmatic pioneer doesn’t disappoint with two original tracks sure to please his adoring fan base. Both tracks feature other artists with samples from Alog on Buffalo Demon, a percussive, light, groove ridden track. Ricardo is at his weird and wonderful best on Who Are You? featuring Jorge Gonzalez, his fellow Chilean compatriot who provides the vocals on the playful minimal masterpiece. Snap this one up quickly as it’s nearly sold out at most retailers.
Ross 248 – FAS009
Ibiza based vinyl only, hot in demand label Fathers & Sons present their ninth release with label head honcho Julian Perez teaming up with Elephant Ghost’s John Dimas under the Ross 248 moniker. Fans of the pair can be excited as they work more closely together including the recent Elephant Moon party in Ibiza at Underground. As usual quality control is at a sheer and utter premium with 3 choice cuts of deep, dubby house music on offer.
Steve O’Sullivan – Mosaic Split Series Part 5
The Wise Caucasian aka Steve O’Sullivan’s outstanding Mosaic Split Series presents the fifth part with three incredible groove tinged pieces. First up emerging hot talent from Leeds Annie Errez shows exactly why she is one for the radar and has been picked up by minimal Queen tINI, with the delicious stabs over a dubbed out bassline on Discovery Inn. (Future classic right here!) On the b-side, Neville Watson and Drake combine with their Clandestine Project. Vengeance is an analog monster with its machine vibe and heavy trudging low end. Capping off the ep is the middle of the night, dancefloor destroyer in Slave to the System. This one is not for the feint hearted with its huge stabs, uplifting melody and funky bass.
Tried and Tested
Thomas Melchior – Meditations 1-6
The Tried & Tested record this month comes in from the unmistakeable Thomas Melchior with his Meditations 1-6 on the famous Perlon label, who have clocked up over 100 releases to date. No stranger to the label Melchior brings his inimitable sound featuring a mixture of emotive, vibrant house cuts in Meditation 2 and 5, packed full of compelling percussion, snappy hi’s and playful melodies. Whilst the other choice picks of 1 and 3 are entrancing, swaying and mystical. Suitable to be used to release after hours hypnotism to maximum effect. Melchior once again proving that less is more.
