Split Personality: Maceo Plex & Maetrik

So you’re moving on and being more independent, what are your plans for Maetrik on the production front?

I have an EP coming out on Minus, Richie Hawtin’s label and then I have one coming out on Ellum Audio. The Minus release worked out, although I hadn’t done anything on a label other than mine for a while, because I’d really enjoyed playing at Enter. that I wrote a track for Enter. called Enter Space. I just thought it fitting for it to come out on Minus. It’s a pretty cool track. Most of my upcoming stuff will be out on Ellum (Audio) though. The next one will be out in March, though I’m still deciding whether I want to call it a Maceo (Plex) record or a Maetrik record. Maybe I’ll go for both as elements of it are really really dark. The Minus release will be out in April or May.

A fitting label if there was one for the Maetrik sound. A long time coming perhaps.

Actually, Richie would never release my music, not because he didn’t like my music I just think that he concentrates on his family of artists and pushing them as much as he can. I always respected what he did, what Minus artists do and how they are quite tightly knit, doing their own thing. It was the right timing though as I did this Enter Space. set and everybody dug the track, Richie really dug it. It’s pretty minimal and pretty technofied so it made sense to put it on there. I told a few people and their responses were similar, they’d been waiting for a record on Minus.

With tastes moving away from deeper bass lines to more techy styles it’s a good time for more people to be exposed to Maetrik. Do you think you have enough of a following yet to tour solely as Maetrik?

I may have to play in front of smaller crowds for a while but I don’t think I’ll be doing a Maetrik tour until I have a new live set. I’m hoping that just with the expectation of a new live set that I’ll be able to attract enough old school Maetrik fans to come out. This particular SIDEXSIDE weekend in London is an opportunity to showcase both sides. I’ve invited a friend of mine named Convextion from Dallas to play at it and Dexter from Holland to play who also did something on Ellum. The night before I’ll be able to play a deeper set with Gardens Of God, a new artist. I’m hoping that we’ll be able to attract enough people.

So the fact that you are waiting for a new live before touring suggests that you’re hoping to play much more Maetrik in the future.

Yeah, I always have generally played more Maetrik music than Maceo Plex. It depends on the way that you play the tracks as they can fit both sets, particularly the tech housier Maetrik records. Recently though I’ve heard DJs playing the darker Maetrik records like “Crush On Me” and “The Entity” and people going nuts. I feel like it’s time to bring those records, that are five years old, back as well as making new stuff like that.

What is it that you particularly enjoy about playing a Maetrik night? Does it have a more purist feel to it?

I used to work at a record store since the mid 90’s up until 2005. I went through the “pure” stage, which a lot of people do, especially when you’re young. I really got into it and was like I don’t like anybody other than Sandwell District, you know, the mentality was like fuck everybody other than Blawan! I went through that phase too when I thought that Manchester electro was it, like Modern Love, which I thought was the best label in the world. I went through that phase so I’m kind of getting back to some of that. I’m bringing my friend Convextion out to London and he’s one of the guys that taught me about production back in the 90’s. So I’ll bring him, bring Dexter out and go back to some of the purist styles to play some of the records that I never get a chance to play.

Excited?

Yeah, I’m really excited. It’s a little less, I wouldn’t say superficial, but a little bit less fashion and a lot more nerdy. So it’s really exciting to do it and that’s why I asked to do two nights back to back. Get my fix of both.

So it’s going to be a pretty full-on weekend for you and slightly different to your normal touring schedule. Any difference in the way you’ll prepare for the weekend in London?

Not really, I’m just focussing on getting my own music ready for it. I’m trying to complete the mix-downs of some new tracks so I can bust those out. We’re also doing an in store at Phonica Records on the Saturday before the Maetrik night. Convextion and I will play a back-to-back set so I guess I’m going to buy some new records at Phonica! Maybe they’ll hook me up with some discount.

So if you guys want to get an idea of what we’ll be playing on Saturday night, come down to Phonica and have a listen to our set.

Maceo Plex/Maetrik plays the SIDEXSIDE Ellum Special on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd February 2014. For a night of unadulterated techno head down to Factory 7 in Shoreditch or Phonica beforehand on the 22nd to whet your appetite. Get your tickets for both events below:
