Nicson – Cannonball

nicson.jpgLabel: Disc OverRelease: Out Now

In next to no time at all, Tim Green’s Disc Over imprint has quickly emerged as one of 2014’s most promising labels. Central to that fact is, of course, the work of Tim himself (whose A&R duties deserve some credit), and also the bevy of talented producers who he’s leant on in that time. The latest such protagonist to take on the job is Nicson, an emerging producer who’s already turned out for similarly inclined labels a la Holic Trax, Upon You and Souvenir. And when it comes to stepping up to the plate for Disc Over, he certainly makes his presence known.

The Cannonball EP kicks off with ‘New Beginning’; a sprightly workout of a track that’s layered around some clever percussion and a forceful ethos. Mind you, there’s still more than enough groove going on to keep us focused throughout. ‘Light Rider’ is all about the crashing snares and cymbals, and this one is all about subtle measures until the madcap synths decide to run amok.

‘Simply Things’, however, is my pick of the bunch, and is by some distance the EP’s most electrifying and ominous party-starter. As such, Nail is a suitable man to transform it into a whole new beast, which is exactly what he does on his jacking and relentless remix. Disc Over’s diverse streak continues in exactly the sort of vein we hoped it would.
