Monty The Fly is the latest alias of Sam Smith. No not the ‘Money on my mind singer’ but Sam Smith the boss of the Nothing Odd Recordings label. His second outing on the imprint, the three tracks he serves up on the EP are deliciously detailed and well produced affairs that toy with dub, minimalism and tons of atmosphere.

Up first is ABV, a scuttling, moody track with well designed percussion rolling over deep beats. Alien sounds litter the groove and its one of which Villalobos would be proud. Ahradic is another minimal groove with floaty light hi hats, weird voices permeating the arrangement and plenty of supple, bendy synths. Lastly, Coco Pox is a haunting and haunted affair with late night synths, shadowy drums and intriguing details that make your mind as much as your ass go into overdrive. Though still young, already this label, and its boss, is proving itself to be up there with the best of them.

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
