La Familia at Ants – Ushuaia, Ibiza
If you have ever been to the extravagant Ushuaia hotel venue in Ibiza before you will be used to the big EDM names on offer such as David Guetta, Avicii and Hardwell. However on Saturdays something a little different comes to the white walls of the Playa D’en Bossa beach front venue. We attended ANTS as they took over La Famillia for a special night with performances from Nic Fanciulli & Joris Voorn.
Entering the club at 3pm I am provided with a fan that reads “Music is the Antswer”, I walk up to the back of the venue where the party was getting started. There is a nice feel about the place with a small crowd gathered around the small pool area sipping drinks and dipping their feet.
Getting things started around the smaller circular DJ booth is Los-Angeles based artist Lauren Lane. Wearing shades she proceeded to kick things off playing bouncy tech-house. It’s no surprise she’s caught the eye of labels such a Visionquest and La Familia curator Nic Fanciulli’s Saved Records.
By mid- afternoon the temperature started to rise as Circus Records boss Yousef took to the decks and moved through a set of quirky house and techno that seemed to rise with the sun as it got ever hotter in the sky, including his brand new track on Circus By The Way You Dance.
The afternoon moved on and the colony joined the party. The ANTS distinctive branding included performers covered in all black lycra jump suits and glamorous dancers who proceeded to strut their stuff.
Next up was Secondcity who brought a bright energy to the decks. Playing some perfectly timed deep and piano house, he got those who were previously sat around the pool off their feet. Ecstatic faces could be seen all around as he dropped the UK number 1 hit I Wanna Feel.
As the sun started to set, the party was getting into full flow. The small booth became engulfed with fans of Moon Harbour’s Matthias Tanzmann. Knowing how to get a party started from his years at DC10, the colony was now invaded with a sea of ravers moving to the darker tech-house beats.
Now it had reached the time everyone had been waiting for, as lights lit up on the larger main stage area, a huge LED ant could be seen. The party moved from the smaller area at the back of the venue to the front. Gasps could be heard as those eager to see what was happening rushed to get a spot on the barrier.
Nic Fanciulli and Joris Voorn then proceeded to blast their way through a phenomenal set of prime time tech-house and techno that proved why their b2b sets have been so successful around the world. Feeding off each other, the nights curators played with a smile on their faces and seemed to make the massive crowd move a little more with every drop in their 2 and a half hour long set.
Mixing tracks like 2014 Island anthem Patrick Topping’s Forget with darker techno such as Shadowprint by Bart Skills they showed how playing a wide variety of music and not taking yourself too seriously can work in an open air venue such as Ushuaia. This was evidently shown in the way revellers stuck with them all night and were treated to blasts of confetti, CO2 and fire for their efforts.
La Famillia looks set to be the perfect party to link the house and techno underground with island veterans this September whilst ANTS continue to do what they do best by dazzling revelleres with unrivalled levels of production quality and assembling some of Ibiza hottest line ups this year. Keep up the good work guys!
