Hank & Deck – The Message

Hank & Deck.jpgLabel: Basica RecordingsScore: 7/10

Hoping to rise through the ranks of modern day house producers are Hank & Deck, a British production duo here turning up on Simone Vitullo’s Basica Recordings. It is a label that is well known in discerning circles and has seen legends like Todd Terry release on it in the past. The two tracks from this pair are deep, dubby house rollers designed for maximum impact on the floor.

First is the rather elastic The Message, with its roaming chords, gritty atmosphere and rolling drums. It’s a lumpy, grainy, greyscale cut that is stripped to bare essentials but that will make for a nice occult mood come 3am. On the flip, Skips is a little more loose and wiggly, with a drilling bassline, super raw, coarse hand claps and plenty of dark wave tension that seldom gets released instead just keeps building and building. A fine brace of tunes, then, that are a feather in the bow of both label and producer.

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
