The UK based label Flumo Records has unearthed and showcased a series of interesting and intricate EPs since its conception way back in 2005. As keen to represent established acts as they are more celebrated names of the scene, it’s an agenda and way of working that’s endeared them to plenty. Here, for their latest release, they call on the fairly elusive Barcelona resident Half Caste, a man who’s supported some of the scene’s leading lights at the Carpe Diem party in the city.
And on the Began 2 Wonda EP, he reminds us exactly why this is the case thanks to a series of cuts that enforces the reputation of all parties. A lush melding of rising snyths and other celestial vibes, the original is a pure house track that harks back to the days of Larry Heard et al.
The T.W.I.C.E Slow Cooked Mix is a tad overly melancholic, although it does force parallels with Massive Attack at their atmospheric and submerged best. Chocky’s Numbers Mix, on the other hand, is a veritable delight, with its sprightly and upbeat outlook one that’s hard not to raise a smile to. Lastly, the wishy-washy, floating pads of ‘Rabbit Hole’ vie for our attention. Credit to Half Caste for taking a chance with an unusual sound palette, because on this occasion, it really works, as the chopped and unkempt beats quite literally bring us down a rabbit hole that’s bulging with glistening synths and more nuanced and subtle artifacts.
