David Morales’ Top 10 Red Zone remixes

Share

For decades, House Music legend David Morales has worked his Red Zone remix magic, creating some of the biggest dance classics in the history of the genre. As he continues to rock the spot with a hot set of remixes on his single, ’NINI Part 2’, with Timmy Regisford and Toshi, we invited him to look back on 10 of his favourite Red Zone reworks.

1. I’LL BE YOUR FRIEND – ROBERT OWENS

This was a red zone classic. This was recorded and mixed in my bedroom with Robert Owens recording vocals in my bathroom. I played this first off of a reel to reel before it was even signed.

2. I’M THE ONE YOU NEED – JODY WATLEY

This mix is a fav of John Digweed. This was when it was cool to play mid-tempo records. This mix took on a dark progressive journey. It was when I even started playing around with vocal effects.

3. ANOTHER SLEEPLESS NIGHT – MIKE “HITMAN” WILSON FEAT: SHAWN CHRISTOPHER

One of my first Red Zone mixes. I took the break from the classic mix and just extended it creating almost a whole new record.

4. WHERE LOVE LIVES – ALISON LIMERICK

What can I say about this classic tune? In any way shape or form, it rocks. This mix starts off very dubby and then when the piano drops you’re done.

5. I WANT YOU – STARPOINT

Another mid-tempo monster this was. It was all about the bassline and the vocal on this mix. Minimal but powerful. And very emotional with an amazing vocal.

6. USELESS – KYM MAYZELLE

I love the cinematic journey that this mix takes you on. A bit of darkness with some lushness.

7. WHAT DID I DO TO YOU – LISA STANSFIELD

This is one of my favourite Red Zone mixes. It’s just haunting and dark. Lisa Stansfield just takes you away.

8. PUMP UP THE JAM – TECHNOTRONIC

I was one of the first DJ’s in America/NYC to play this record. I even got it signed to SBK Records in America. This was an anthem for me at the Red Zone. People would come up to the booth and ask what it was. The Red Zone Mix was just a twist of the original with a bunch of different synth sounds.

9. DIRTY CASH – STEVIE V

This record was born in the Red Zone. I first played the original then remixed it. It then became a top 10 pop record in the world. It’s all about that jungle tribal groove.

10. I LIKE IT – OVERWEIGHT POOCH

I just love the bassline on this mix. I think I’ll recreate it and make a new track.

David Morales & Timmy Regisford Ft.Toshi ‘NINI Part 2’ (incl. Red Zone Mixes) is out now on DIRIDIM Records.

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
