Brodanse – Activate feat. Cari Golden
Label: Danse ClubRelease: 29/04/2013
With every DJ currently wading through his vinyl collection in a bid to discover that unknown mid 90’s House EP that they almost forgot they had Danse Club label bosses Scott & Austen Smart made our lives a whole lot easier with the release of a series of reissues and remixes of US House classics at the tail end of 2012. Now the pairing have readied their own release Activate under the label for their collaborative project Brodanse and it has lost none of the retro charm that has infused so many of their recent reissues despite having a more contemporary edge. This is not the first time the pairing have worked in tandem having already released their debut EP under the Brodanse moniker on Chicago’s Fresh Meat Records and they’re set to follow this single with another effort with the highly respected Fullbarr in the near future.
So why are these guys in so much demand? One listen to Activate and you’ll have your answer. Punctuated by the distinctive vocals of Cari Golden, the original is straight classic sounding House. Bass driven grooves overlap emotive piano chords which sporadically litter the arrangement to continually keep the track fresh and moving.
Then there are the remixes- Berlin’s Oliver $ is first up and instantly gives the track a more intense vibe as he builds his reworking of the original around a subtle rift that continually piques your attention without ever threatening to make a lunge for the spotlight. Delicate and perfect for warming up on a summer evening; think of that Mannheim sound that burst into the international consciousness around 2008 and you wouldn’t be far off encapsulating this track. The EP is then rounded off with Lumino taking things much, much deeper that really allow the vocals to shine over breathy stabs that lead to a surprisingly dramatic breakdown.
With incarnations to provide a DJ with version to play whatever his slot and grooves to satisfy even the fussiest connoisseur this isn’t a single to be missed and we eagerly await what Brodanse deliver next.
