This month Ilenia picks her 5 for October.

Known for injecting ethnic, acoustic and organic vibes into sound, Stavroz is changing the way we listen to dance music. Formed in 2011 by IJsbrand & Gert, two multi-talented DJ’s and sound engineers that were looking for a way to channel their musical antics. Antics soon-after expanded by Maxim & Pieter who joined in the studio for the creation of their first EP ‘The Ginning’ (2013). This introductory EP made seismic waves across international blogs, landing the highest position on the Hype Machine and chosen as vinyl of the month by Germany’s Faze Magazine. Back home in Belgium, Stavroz were awarded second best breakthrough artist that year. These four friends have since pocketed releases for Kindisch, Laut & Luise, Bedrock, Delicieuse and their own label ‘Moodfamily.’ Their intimate live sets and unique DJ sets display an uncanny ability to combine the old with the new and the East with the West. What hooked us was this masterfully crafted mix for Get Physical radio.

Catch Stavroz playing alongside Mira, Acid Pauli, and Rampue at Kater Blau (Berlin) on November 26th.

Get familiar with the New York-based live electronic trio N/um (pronounced “Noom”). Three long-time friends using analog synthesizers, drum machines, stringed instruments and voices in live composition to create new-age, minimal techno worthy of a listen. Their 2016 debut album Zebra was included in ‘XLR8R’s Best of 2016’ and gained wide international recognition. The group consists of five-time Grammy Award winning mastering engineer and producer Jeremy Loucas, guitarist of world-renowned rap group Residente (Calle 13) Elias Meister and Danish multi-instrumentalist and producer Emil Bovbjerg. The three, having recorded and performed together in different formations over the past decade, have become a solid musical unit under N/um, capable of capturing major dance floors while bringing the unique immediacy and spontaneity of pure, free improvisation to places where it is rarely heard: festivals, nightclubs and underground warehouse-parties. Each performance or recording by N/um is innovative and improvised with no pre-composed songs, no plan or structure agreed upon. Despite the daring premise and unconventional creative approach, the raison d’etre and mission statement of N/um is simple: The opposite of war is a dance floor.

Keep an ear out for N/um newness titled ‘Yes’ coming to Ninetofire this December.

Affelaye is the moniker for London based producer Joe Martin. His down-tempo productions are subtly melancholic, yet beautifully melodic. Find yourself adrift in otherworldly sequences drawing influences from Dubstep, Garage and R&B for a truly unique, down-tempo enchantment. Each Affelaye production unravels ambient layers that mix smoothly alongside chopped R&B vocals and understated percussive drums. The 2016 release ‘Thirsts” marked a new chapter for the Bristol-based producer. After the color and vibrancy of debut EP ‘Maybe There’, Affelaye honed in on a full-bodied dreamscape that’s intricately detailed and expansive in sound. ‘Thirsts’ embodies the fresh feel and direction of the artists’ music and remains as melodic and moving as previous works. B.Traits put him on our radar and melting into Affelaye’s ‘Want Me’ kept us hooked.

Be sure to track Affelaye on Soundcloud for his latest works.

We could dive into the hard facts about how Lubelski’s sound has evolved over the years, or how he started playing music at 3 years old by banging sticks on a tin can, or how Lubelski’s mother found him in the jungle as an orphan with nothing but a pair of Beats headphones. But in reality, Lubelski is just a kid from Los Angeles who loves trippy dance music. His love of psychedelia and the ever-lasting groove of house and techno has started to sculpt a new niche in West Coast dance music. His sound reflects an eclectic blend of influences from Classic & Psychedelic Rock, Funk, Soul, Disco, R&B, and Jazz across the universal rhythms of House, all while remaining true to the Lubelski name. He has seen a string of releases on acclaimed labels including Nervous, Desert Hearts, Popgang, and Nite to name a few. His commissioned remix work for record labels like Sweat it Out!, Grooverdose, and TMG have gained him recognition across his multiplicity of aliases. He’s officially indebted into the Desert Hearts crew with the release of his newest EP ‘Keep Going,’ a sleazy, funky groove sure to erupt on the dancefloor. Get familiar with this Cali talent on his rise to psychedelic stardom.

Catch Lubelski and the Desert Hearts crew this Friday at Public Works in San Francisco.

SOSO is the playground from and for Oliver Schories and friends to showcase a variety of intelligent contemporary electronic dance music. Included in this variety of oscillating talent is Hamburg native ANOUKA. Her take on emotive, brain-stimulating deep house has honed her a comfy spot on the SOSO label with a lush list of tunes that need be on your radar. Her set recordings and tracks such as ‘Frequent Traveler,’ ‘The Dust,’ and massive collabo with Midas 104 on ‘Liberte’ send our minds adrift along elemental, melodic narratives. ANOUKA keeps quiet in the outskirts of the underground, but her productions delve deep into the land of beautiful, quality down-tempo/deep house. What captured us and kept us coming back for more was the live recording of Anouka’s first gig in Bremen.

Follow ANOUKA on Soundcloud for her latest majestic works.
