Acumen & Ranacat – Tantalizing

French producer Acumen has long been a proponent of clued-in house music, generally on his label, Time Has Changed. Having recently established a new label, Thrill of It, he returns to THC here for an outing that really does signal his new ambitions. A collaboration with Ranacat, the Tantalizing EP sees the producer go down a rabbit hole that’s laden with cunning complexities – which is just the way we like it.

Colourful motifs abound on the title track, a melancholy slice of blissful fare that tugs on the emotions. A really bittersweet weapon, it’s subtle acid tinges and groove-soaked bassline see Acumen adopt a stance that’s a world away from his tech-house origins. When he’s on form like this, it’s no bad thing – while the pop influences are obvious here too.

‘Orchis Simia’, complete with its many Chicago essences, sounds like something the late, great Frankie Knuckles might well have spun, before Gorge closes the ahem, tantalizing EP with a remix of the latter that’s made for crazier times. In that essence, there’s a varying degree of emotions on show here. No bad thing, we hasten to add.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
