Achilles & One – La Musica

Label: Love Harder

Score: 7/10

Much of the appeal of German label Love Harder lies in the fact that you’re never sure what they’ve got up their sleeve for their latest release. As it happens, their latest sees them come correct once more. Arriving from the dab hands that are Achilles & One, the La Musica EP is an enticing, sun-drenched offering that – despite maintaining a more summery aesthetic – will at least prove a winner on winter dancefloors.

Up first is the heady sounds of the original. Full of spellbinding keys and a winding sense of mystery, it swaggers with a playful edge that’s in line with classic NYC tropes. If you’re looking to raise the roof, this one can be considered a suitably potent weapon indeed. Mighty Mouse’s remix follows a vehement tech-house path that’s full of wonder, while Kenny Hectyc drops a really refined interpretation that speaks to fans of classic Larry Heard especially. High praise yes, but this is the one that’ll linger longest in the memory here.

Closing the door on the EP is the assured sounds of Magic Touch, who summon up another classy effort, albeit one that’s tinged with a sense of introspection and sadness. A dizzying EP of contrasting and colourful timbres, this might just signal the label’s finest offering to date.
