322 – Martinez
We aren’t sure what it about Scandinavia that allows the region to produce such a high volume of quality electronic music but there surely must be something to it. The air? The water? Well we can neither confirm or deny any theory regarding why the area is such a hotbed of creativity for electronica but rather revel in the Nordic cool. This weeks Podcast sees us head to Sweden as Martin Swanstein, better know to you and me as Martinez delivers up this slickly driven mix marauding through the annuals of House and Techno.
After moving to Copenhagen from his native Sweden in 2000 Martinez has enjoyed a rapid rise through the industry where he landed a record deal with the renowned Guidance Recording label in Chicago. Several EP’s later and Martinez found himself one of the most sought after remixers in the world with reworks commissioned by some of the scenes biggest names such as Danish pop/house act Filur as well as Silicone Soul, Jussi Pekka, Dibaba, Spiro Projecto and later Underworld, Luna City Express, Miss Kittin, Mathew Dear & Seth Troxler and his remix of Nathan Fake’s “The Sky Was Pink” became a key weapon in many a DJ’s arsenal. He then spent the rest of decade building his reputation as one of the worlds best DJ’s, producers and label bosses playing the hottest night spots across the globe.
So after remixing a who’s who of the DJ world, launching several labels of his own for both his own music and that of his talented friends and crafting 3 esteemed albums on the way we thought it was high time we secured his services for the DT podcast. A DJ’s DJ along with reputedly impeccable taste Martinez has a strong DJ reputation worldwide with him often seen in the booths of various quality clubs and parties around the globe including a set of summer dates at the iconic Cocoon parties in Ibiza. So without further ado let us introduce you to the sublime sounds of Martinez. Enjoy. Sum up this podcast in 10 words… Breakbeats, House Music, Techno, Rhythms, Grooves, Vinyl & lots of basssss! What’s your personal favourite track on it? There is an old Plumphouse record that I recently found in my collection from Alexi Delano under his, “Bob Brewthbaker” moniker. I really feel in love with this record again and been playing all the tracks on there. Its dirty techno’ish deep house, the way the Swedish knew how to do it. What’s the special ingredient in this mix? My record collection. Its mixed on 2 turntables and mixer with only vinyl records from my shelves. What’s the best gig you’ve played recently? I had lots of fun recently playing at the Cocoon Heroes stage at We Are FSTVL in Essex, UK. I played before Sven Väth which was a real honor for me. The production of the stage and festival was huge with a great sound system. What have you got coming up? I am currently working on new material, for various EP’s & 12″ as well as a new album. I just released a new three track EP called: Magnolia EP on a dear friend of mine, Jorge Savoretti’s label Savor Music. I also have a few remixes coming out, first one for Dale Howard on Klangkultur from German and another one of Pier Bucci on Serkal from New York. And finally, do you have a special message for our readers? Go out dancing whenever you get the chance…!
